Mayo's first street feast

category mayo | environment | news report author Monday July 26, 2010 18:30author by Cat - Rossport Solidarity Camp Report this post to the editors

Around 150 people came to Mayo's first street feast last weekend in Kilcommon Parish.

Street feasts - where neighbours get together to share food and party - are popping up all over Ireland. The idea is for people to celebrate their local communities and meet new people who live nearby. Kilcommon Parish's street feast last weekend was at McGuire's pub, where there was wonderful food, traditional music, dancing and games. But it was extra special because people are uniting to save their community from being destroyed.

Shell, backed by the Irish government, plans to build an unsafe and raw gas pipeline through the heart of the community and its beautiful landscape. People here are fighting back, and the latest battle is 'Beat the Boreholes' http://www.rossportsolidaritycamp.org/content/beat-bore...holes, a campaign to stop Shell's drilling work in the bay. At the street feast many people signed up to a submission to An Bord Pleanala, asking them not to allow Shell's plans to go ahead. When people eat, dance and resist together, they are stronger and their campaigns are more likely to succeed.
