Castlebar students stage walkout, march to office of Beverly Cooper Flynn T.D

category mayo | education | news report author Saturday December 11, 2010 02:26author by FEE Report this post to the editors

Walkout in Castlebar on Thursday, December 9.
Castlebar students.
Castlebar students.

On Thursday, students from several Castlebar educational institutes staged walkouts in opposition to the cuts which were unveiled in the Budget this week.

The student body of St. Gerald’s College and Davitt College called this protest to show their opposition to the savage cuts against students and the working people of Ireland in general.

The students marched onto the office of Beverly Cooper Flynn T.D. They expressed their support and solidarity with the Clondalkin youth who staged a walkout on budget day.

Tired of being completely unrepresented and alienated by the political system, students made a decision, independently, to use the only mechanism available to express their anger.

In doing so, they showed that the students of Ireland will not stand idly by while the Government destroys their future and punishes them for a situation which they had no part in creating.

The walkouts, organised separately by the student bodies of each institution, converged on the Mall in Castlebar, where the main protest was held. Many students marched under the banner of FEE (Free Education for Everyone), a national student organisation which opposes Third Level fees and education cuts.

The walkout protest by secondary schools in Castlebar follows a similar protest by students from two schools in Clondalkin. Moyle Park College in Clondalkin is now threatening one of the organisers, Shane Donnelly with expulsion.

Finally!! Well done to all involved. Great action. It's your futures these assholes are stealing. It's good that you have taken it upon yourselves to do something about it. Alas, Beverley probably didn't give a crap though. Just kept on swilling in the trough. Hard to hear demonstrators when swilling. And people like that don't give a monkeys if kids miss school or don't get an education anyway. If they did they wouldn't be in the "school prefab" party FF.

I hope plenty of you are old enough to vote for parties other than the FF/FG/Labour cosy cuts consensus. (they all go along more or less with bailouts / cuts)
Vote for a real change instead of the usual suspects ( maybe try ULA / SF with no transfers to FF/FG/LAB )

Hi 'Mayo' !
Well done , those Castlebar students - I live in Clondalkin , Dublin , and actually heard students from Moyle Park talking about this in the Clondalkin Village area - they were thrilled with the support for Shane Donnelly and the overall campaign!
Keep it going , and please post any such future activities on 'Indymedia' , as it may encourage others to follow your good example.
Thanks!
Sharon.

Its been a long time since I was a student, but well done to everyone involved. Al least some young people have not been infected with apathy, if the 'government' get away with it, what will they inflict on us next? by 'government' I include the so-called alternative

Well done to all the students involved. I also cheered on the throngs of kids and teenagers who took to the streets along with community activists and parents on Friday. Fair play.

Great to hear .......... Im from just outside Castlebar, living in Canada, totally disillusioned with young Ireland .... where are the balls?.... we are Celts for crying out loud ... dont let 'em walk on us ....
The establishment has been exposed ... political dynasties supporting business dynasties supporting political dynasties ...... and we have been paying for it, taxes go to propping up the gambling rich while services are chopped .....
empty your bank accounts and take to the streets...........
Thanks for restoring a little faith, but dont give up just yet. Well done!!!!
