Over a hundred people attended a protest last night against the plan by Dublin City Council to close a number of community swimming pools.
These pools, in Crumlin, Coolock, and at Seán MacDermott Street in the north inner city, are some of the few places which provide activities for families and young people.
The City Management has said that the pools don't make money so they will have to close. The fact that other community facilities like libraries, street lights, litter bins, etc don't have to pay their way has escaped them, and the vital importance of leisure facilities in disadvantaged areas seems to be of little interest.
At the Council meeting, a vote to continue funding the pools until August was passed, but beyond that the future is not secure.
Dublin City Council is currently building a new swimming pool in Rathmines.
