Sri Lanka Govt draw up Death List

category international | anti-war / imperialism | other press author Monday May 25, 2009 09:06author by CWI Report this post to the editors

United Socialist Party leader on death list

Following the defeat of the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka by the army, the govt is using this victory as an opportunity to remove all and any opposition to their hold on power and have drawn up a death list of people they want to get rid of.

One of those is the United Socialist Party leader who has been put on death list

To put some context on the situation, here is the situation.

The Sri Lanka government has claimed that in the final assault against the Tamil Tiger that they have looked after the well being of the population. However numerous reports and pictures attest to widespread indescriminate bombing and it is estimated up to 7,000 civilians have been killed in the final days.

The Sri Lanka govt which has been fighting this war for 25 years and their counterparts in the military unlikely to turn from mass killings into benign democrats and it is quite clear that the next target is the entire population of Sri Lanka most of which is poor. Now that the govt will have time and attention to focus on the rest of the country, lo behold anyone who might stand up for better conditions or their rights and in clear preparation for this, the Sri Lanka govt has drawn up a death list and unsurprisenly, the leader of the United Socialist Party is on it, as are numerous NGO activists and various politicians.

Details of those on the death list can be found at the link below
