Historic Walk around Rathmines and Cathal Brugha Barracks

category dublin | history and heritage | event notice author Wednesday March 09, 2016 22:36author by arthur Swan - InRathmines Report this post to the editors

A Proclamation Day Event

A guided walk: People and Places in Rathmines, including the historic Cathal Brugha Army Barracks, will leave Rathmines Town Hall at 2.15 pm, Tuesday, March 15th. Free event.

If you’re at a loose end this coming Tuesday (March 15th) afternoon, you might really enjoy the free guided walk around Rathmines, including the historic Cathal Brugha Army Barracks, which is leaving Rathmines Town Hall at 2.15 pm. The event is sponsored by Rathmines College as part of its Proclamation Day, (a special day in which colleges and colleges commemorate the 1916 Rising), programme of events.

Rathmines has many connections the events of 1916, not least the seizure of Davy's Pub at Portobello Bridge, in which a detachment of rebels was positioned to detain any movement of British Soldiers from the barracks. However, it is particularly poignant to stand in the small exercise yard behind the barracks guardroom where pacifist Francis Sheehy Skeffington was murdered on April 26th 1916. Today the guardroom is a small museum with some very interesting artefacts, particularly some memorabilia that belonged to Michael Collins.
