Asgard Landing/Howth Gun-running Commemoration 99 Years
Sinn Fein commemorates the 99th anniversary of the yacht Asgard's daring delivery of rifles and ammunition to the Irish Volunteers in 1914, at the Howth Pier Lighthouse.
The commemoration will be held Saturday, July 27th at 2:30pm on the East Pier, Howth, County Dublin. Music, re-enactors, colour party, speakers, raffles, food and drink follow at The Waterside Bar.
Mauser Model 1891 Rifle from the Asgard A commemoration of the celebrated Howth Gun-Running of 1914 will be held Saturday, the 27th of July on the East Pier at Howth Harbour—the original landing site of the yacht Asgard, bearing Erskine and Molly Childers and members of the Irish Volunteers in the lead-up to the 1916 Easter Rising.
The event commemorates 99 years since the landing of 900 Mauser rifles and 29,000 rounds of black powder ammunition at the Howth Lighthouse and into the hands of the Irish Volunteers. This consignment would see duty in the Dublin GPO and other Volunteer strong-points on Easter Sunday, 1916.
The commemoration will include re-enactors and colour party dressed in period Irish Volunteer uniforms and clothing, available for photo opportunities with members of the public.
Dublin native historian and author Eoin Ó Broin will deliver the commemorative talk. The republican flute band Rising Phoenix will provide appropriate theme music along with special guests. There will be a prize raffle and drawing before adjourning to the Waterside Bar on the promenade for food, refreshments and music.
Location: Howth East Pier at the Lighthouse
Time: 2:30-5pm
Date: Saturday, 27 July 2013
